New Job = New Workout Routine

January 29, 2013

So it’s been two months at my new job and I am finally settling into my routine at the office and my commute to and from. However my workouts have suffered – I barely get out the door to run and forget about cross training. But, I think I found a solution. Yesterday I had a pretty good run! I was committed to the idea all day long – asked hubby to pick up some groceries for me so I wouldn’t have to stop on my way home. Also told him that I wanted to run, so dinner was something that could wait for me. As soon as I got home – said hello to my kids and went and changed right away and went for my run. It felt good to actually fulfill my commitment to myself and it felt good to run AND I was able to push myself a little on the run – something I had been neglecting to do. Goal is to get through this week, run every other night and either walk or do some home exercises on the non running nights.

Joined a Running Group

Last weekend a local mother’s running group that I joined sometime last year had their first group run. Eleven of us showed up – great turn out for the first run! Our leader was a young mom who is training for the Disney Princess Half Marathon. We did a nice slow 2 mile run – everyone at their own pace. While it was short – it was nice to go out and chat with other mothers. We decided to meet every Saturday at 8:30 at the park and one person bringing drinks and snacks.

Today was a little cool and drizzling – but four of us showed up and we started with a C25K program. We are going to pick a local race and do some shirts.

I am going to continue my Sunday long runs, have to work on getting my two short runs during the week – but am enjoying the short run and the company on Saturday morning.

Holiday season off to a good start!

Thanksgiving was a wonderful day here at our house. James cooked and the food was ready by noon. We all sat at the table and enjoyed wonderful food and being together as a family. I can’t remember the last time I had a day that I was able to enjoy without thinking of my to do list. I still managed to hit Walgreens as soon as they opened, Walmart for their 8:00 pm sale and Target at 9:00 pm.

Black Friday took us to JCPenney’s, Dillards, PetSmart and Justice.  What I wasn’t able to get at the stores I was able to get online….Amazon, Overstock and Best Buy.

We put up our tree, but since Boo Boo loves climbing the tree, I can only put plastic ornaments up 😦 I have some beautiful glass and ceramic ornaments that I have collected through the years – but they aren’t going on my tree.

Healthwise – I gained two – yes, two pounds my first week at my new job – everyone brings in sweets every day…I need to learn how to control myself!  Then to top it off – my runs have been horrible – just can’t find my pace.  But at least I am out there hitting the pavement.

Finally Having Fun!

Breaking Dawn Part 2 – what a great movie! If you are a Twilight fan. Went with Desi and some friends from my old job. We all loved it! We went to the 10:30 am showing on Saturday – nice and empty. There were laughs and tears and we thoroughly enjoyed the movie….can’t wait for the DVD to come out so I can enjoy it at home. After the movie we went out for some Cuban food to celebrate Mary’s birthday – some more friends (they are not Twilight fans) and we had some lechon with rice and beans and sweet plaintains – yummy!!!

So yes, this was a week of food – Sunday morning instead of dying my hair – I went for my run – I was supposed to do 6 miles – but came short at 5.65 miles – I was able to maintain a 12 ish minute pace, which made me happy.

An old high school friend invited me to an arts and crafts show where she was selling hair bows – Ava likes them (every once in a blue moon) so we went – it was so nice to see her after 28 years – she looks the same. I still can’t believe how many people from West New York have moved down to South Florida. We quickly caught up and I found a couple of cute bows and asked her to make some for Ava.

Rest of my Sunday was spent doing laundry, grocery shopping and watching Twilight….pretty good weekend!

Survived First Week

What a looonnggg week!

I prepared myself mentally for my new 30 mile commute to work – good news its a holiday!  Light traffic!!!

Last week the owner of the company I used to work at passed away, so services were on Monday night and Tuesday night. This was the first time I had been to a Catholic church since we moved down from NJ. The architecture was very modern – made me miss up north and my little church that I grew up in.

The rest of the week wasn’t too bad. A birthday lunch for my boss, an international potluck lunch and a welcome lunch for me – I haven’t eat so much food in so long! I am missing working out at lunch and I was only able to run on Thursday, as on Tuesday, Ava wanted to join me and we ended up walking around the block.  I have to find a way to get more exercise into my day….

Looking forward seeing Twilight Breaking Dawn 2 with my friends and a fairly quiet weekend!

Today I started a new job….I went back to work with my old company.  I am saddened that it didn’t work out, but I do believe things happen for a reason. I will miss my friends that I made in the past three years – definitely will keep in touch with them! Am going to miss the gym and working out at lunchtime, and the short drive to work. Looking at the positive side of things – now I HAVE to run after work – so that means more pavement time 🙂

My summer of friends, exercise and reading

Okay – so by now I have just completely lost track of how many weeks I have been sick. I still feel it in my chest. UGH! I hate being sick! But life goes on? Right?

Weekend was nice – but just flew by – like always. Saturday we finally sold our van – it had been sitting in the driveway for months without being used. It was a sad moment for James and I – we had so many vacation memories in that car. Then afterwards, I had lunch with some friends at Longhorns. It was nice to catch up with my friends. I love soup, so I had the shrimp and lobster chowder with a salad. Sunday Ava had a pool party to go to later in the afternoon, so I spent the morning ironing clothes that had been piling up for two weeks. As it started getting closer to party time – it started raining. This would be the second time the rain canceled the party. Fortunately the rain stopped and the party continued. The waterpark was nice and empty – just another party and perhaps two other families. Ava finally decided to try the diving board – well, as I knew she would, she loved it and kept doing it over and over again.

So, I ran Monday, at lunch, on the treadmill. The office has a small gym and with used equipment – I know that the treadmill is not calibrated properly – but I wonder how off my Nike+ is as well – the higher I set the speed – my pace increases, as in now I am going slower– how is that possible? Too funny! I am not looking to set any records, am happy just getting a workout and burning calories.

Am still reading The Highlander series. So far I like all of them except Into the Dreaming….maybe it was just too short. But today Fever Moon comes out and I want to go to Barnes and Noble to check it out. Also started reading Girl Gone – seems interesting….will continue to read while I wait for the next Highlander book to become available from the library.

July already – really?

So while I have gotten better, I am still coughing and feeling congested.  I ran on Monday on the treadmill – didn’t feel too bad.  I haven’t run outside because I feel that between the heat and my chest being so congested – it might be a recipe for disaster.  Even my husband asked me last night why I am not running in the evenings…..just too hot!

Fourth was nice and quiet for us.  James worked, so Ava and I went to Regal Cinemas Summer Movies and finally saw Hugo  – LOVED IT!!!  Afterwards we went to Menchies and enjoyed our froyo outside – it was a little overcast – so it was nice just to sit and enjoy the day off.  We picked up Desi and ran some errands – went home and made pasta salad and when I looked at the clock – it was four!  The day flew by.  I ended my day by sitting outside and reading more of Karen Marie Moning – The Highlander’s Touch – I never thought of myself as the romance novel reader –but throw in some fantasy stuff and apparently I am!  Nighttime finally came and Desi setoff some fireworks, as did our neighbor across the street.  The kids loved it – me, I was just glad that I could walk into my house and go to bed.  Glad I didn’t go to one of the city sponsored fireworks – traffic is just a nightmare getting out of those things.

Work is being handled one day at a time.  We recently had an independent interviewer come in and talk to us because office morale is so low – but then the company goes and does things that just leaves all of us scratching our heads.  Every day I dream of going back home to New York.  Maybe – one day (sigh).

School’s out for summer!!

School year is over…as I drove Ava to school and we got in line for the drop-off, I got a little teary-eyed. I told Ava this was the last day I would be dropping her off on that side of the school, next year as a fifth grader, she gets to go in through the side of the building. Even James was like where did the time go? Yes, I know I felt like that on Saturday with Desi graduating high school, but Ava is our baby, she was our chance of seeing it all happen again – and it happened so fast! Tuesday I was able to attend the award ceremony. Ava was beaming that she made Honor Roll and the Superintendent’s List with her reading. I know some days have been hard for her, but I told her we would work on her weakness during the summer.

So proud of her!

Desiree looking beautiful as always!

It’s been a hectic week so far, but I managed to sneak in – a walk/run 2.12 in 31:06 at lunchtime on Monday and was able to get a quick run after work on Wednesday, 2.69 in 33:37. It was cloudy and every once in a while I would feel a drop of rain – but can’t decide if I rather run through that humidity or the sun…I am just never happy 😉

Beautiful Crazy Weekend

Ava’s ballet recital was wonderful! She performed her routines beautifully and she said she had fun. My parents and my sister, Janett, were able to make it this year and a family friend, Kara, also joined us, we had a nice time watching the dancers. We laughed at how adorable the little ones were and were amazed at the competition girls. I did my usual running back and forth helping Ava get in and out of her costumes (totally forgot to put my pedometer on). And as soon as it was over Ava got her roses, a few pictures and we quickly went back home.

Now it was time for Desi’s graduation. The ceremony was held at Nova University and they asked that the graduates arrive at 5:15, the ceremony started at 7:30….so for more than 2 hours we waited on line. As usual, we watched in amazement as two people in line ahead of us brought in a party of close to 25 people with them, another person had their party of three people grow to more than 10. We were able to get descent seats, but of course we were on the wrong side of the arena, so we weren’t able to see her walk in or out. We did catch glimpses of her and she was beaming all night long. We had planned on going out to dinner but we didn’t leave until after 10:30 and we were all exhausted, so Desi’s graduation feast was the 24-hour drive through at McDonalds. We celebrated Sunday and went to B.J.’s restaurant and had a nice lunch before Stephen had to go to work. I told both Stephen and Desiree that no matter where they are, when Ava graduates I expect them both to be at her ceremony. Stephen said he would even be at her dance recitals. Gotta love my kids.  My parents, Janett, Lizzy, Jayden and Leilani came  to have some cake to celebrate and it was a nice Sunday afternoon, even if my Dad had to put on the soccer game to watch.

I did manage to run on Friday at lunchtime at work, did 2.57 miles in 30:08 and on Sunday did 2.96 in 37:36. I was out the door a little after 8:00 am, but it was getting hotter by the second. I filled my Nathan water bottle that Stephen gave me for Mother’s Day with Powerade and sipped it throughout my run – definitely liked it better than plain ice water. I wore my WISH 13.1 Princess Bondi Band and it didn’t budge the entire time. I think I had it too far back because towards the end the sweat was burning my eyes a bit. Next time, I will lower it a tad.
